This 10m wide allotment provided a couple of challenges with its north orientation directed to the street, along with a 6m high industrial building immediately to the rear. To keep the project on budget we agreed to pursue a single level, north facing, inner court solution. From the start, our main concern visually was to avoid an all garage door elevation to the street. The built result incorporated a recessed motor court that serves as secondary car accommodation and breezeway entry point. By deleting the traditional front entry door, a more casual and unexpected outcome is embraced. The moment first-time visitors to this home step through the breezeway gate, they find themselves crossing a bridge between the pool and reflection pond which guides them into the northern lit central court. The hero of the home is the north facing pool room, uniquely positioned to allow direct access into the pool itself. This room could morph into a multitude of functions, from pool room, craft room, office, kids zone. Whatever they choose its guaranteed to be a stack of fun. The owner built this house himself, and it's clearly evident when you read the love and attention to detail throughout. We look forward to working with them again on a fresh project in the near future.
